Considering Acne happens due to mixture of few or all of the following reasons :

  • Hormonal imbalance causing excessive oil production or increased cell turnover. It commonly happens during puberty, during or before menstrual period, in diseases like PCOD, etc.

  • Incomplete cleaning with excessive oil,dirt,pollutants/irritants clogging the skin pores.

  • Over cleaning of skin = Stripping it of natural oils & breaking skin barrier (Skin Barrier is skin's border armed force which gives protection. It is made up mainly of natural skin oil/sebum, some good bacteria, proper pH level, good lipids, etc.)

  • Use of harsh irritants.

  • Dehydrated skin, in turn causing more oil production to compensate dryness.

Things we can do to prevent Acne :

  • Use a gentle Facewash for at least 60 seconds

Follow the 60-second facwash rule
  • Use a gentle simple facewash which is effective in cleansing dirt & oil for at least 50-60 seconds. This helps in deep cleansing the pores without stripping natural oil due to harsh chemicals.

  • Use a light gel based moisturiser when required/as per need

    • Skip moisturiser if its too hot and humid. I know it's a controversial statement but thats what has worked for me and most of my patients.

    • No matter how expensive or fancy the cream is, if its too humid and hot it is going to clog your pores somehow.

    • Change your moisturiser as per changing season or your location.

    • You can also use a gel based moisturiser sparing on areas prone to acne.

  • Try to keep the phone away from your face

  • The phone is said to have more germs than a toilet seat. Use it for calls on loudspeaker mode or use headphones/earphones.

  • Also, clean your phone with a sanitiser or sanitized wet wipe every week.

  • Wash your face at least twice daily & in gentle motion

    • Wash your face right after you wake up without touching it with your hands and in the evening after you are done with your work.

    • Avoid Night skincare too close to bed time as it may rub off on the pillow while you sleep.

  • Use salicylic acid serum 2% It can be a game-changer!

    • Use once or twice daily on acne prone areas of your body. It helps in cleaning deeper layers on your skin and unclog the oil pores.

  • Don't use a physical scrub

    • Those "Apricot" & " Walnut" Scrubs we used so often in late 90s and 2000s, are called Physical scrubs.

    • They cause tiny micro-tears on our skin, creating entry points for germs.

  • Use gel based Clindamycin & Niacinamide

    • Clindamycin is an antibiotic against bacteria causing acne.

    • Niacinamide is also known as Nicotinamide and helps in controlling excess oil production, bacterial growth and also with post acne pigmentation.

  • Don't let your hair touch your face

  • Hair may be greasy, have dirt and dandruff stuck on them. Tie them up or clip it away, irrespective of being a girl or boy!

  • Try to keep hormones in balance

    • Exercise/Yoga

    • Clean diet

    • Vitamin supplements

    • Stress control/Meditation

    • Hormones/Medication as per your doctor in case of any disease.

  • Change your pillow cover every two days

  • Use soft decent quality cotton or satin pillow cases and clean them every two days or at least once a week.
