Thank you for liking our last post of Skincare & Haircare on ‘Ways to prevent acne’. We hope it helped you all in some way! Here is another post in that series but not just for our acne prone readers but everyone in general.
Here are 7 mistakes you may or may not making for your skin health & how to better them.
1. Have a regular skincare routine
First things first, whether you are a man or woman, of any age, having a skincare routine is essential.
Let it be simple, if you are busy or get too tired after work but ensure it’s something you can follow everyday (or at least almost everyday!) Without fail.
For example : A gentle cleanser + hydrating sunscreen in the morning & a facewash + moisturizer/specific serum for night time.
2. Using too many products
Layers after layers of serums, creams, essences , multiple actives and moisturizers might do you more harm than good.
It may not only fail to get absorbed in your skin and be useless but also clog your pores to cause more black/whiteheads/acne.
Use only 2-3 products at a time that are specific to your skin’s need.
Space out your skincare products in the morning and night. In case you need to use more than 3 products right now space them out on alternate days.
For example : Say, you have acne prone skin with some scars and hyperpigmentation + you want to avoid blackheads/whiteheads. You can use vitamin C under your sunscreen in the day & use niacinamide/salicylic acid serums at night on alternate nights.
3. Using blackhead strips or abrasive tools
Blackhead strips or weird looking tools for blackhead/whitehead removal are so easily available online these days & are very commonly used at home or salons.
Pulling off the strips in the process or pressing the tools on your skin can cause physical damage causing irritation & hyperpigmentation.
In the long term, it may cause wrinkles and fine lines.
Hygiene is a big problem with the tools. They need to be kept sanitized and sterilized well before & after every use, and we all know how lazy we all are when it comes to that.
4. Using skincare products or make-up with fragrance
The women are more guilty of this than men, in my opinion. As lovely as it is to put on that florally night cream and smell like a French Garden, it may cause your skin irritation at a cellular level and make it more sensitive.
Mild fragrances in skincare or make up products is alright, unless you have very sensitive skin, but we all overdo it sometimes (including myself).
Now a days, brands are conscious of skin needs and health – Many new product lines are fragrances free or free of unnecessary nasties. Choose wisely!
5. I am going to say it loud and clear, “Hand washing is a necessity, not a luxury!”
Wash your hands before you wash your face & before + after you do your skincare and make up.
Use a soap with water, not just water.
Do not forget your nails, in between your fingers, thumbs & wrists.
6. Not using Sunblock/ Sunscreen
Use a good quality sunscreen with minimum SPF of 30+ everyday without fail.
Even when you commute in a car/bus or sit by the glass window, UV rays reach you well – so apply a SPF 30+
If you are out in the open in a sunny or rainy day, use a SPF 50+, and don't forget to reapply sunscreen, it doesn't last forever you know!

7. Using facial scrubs (physical exfoliation)
Like everyone I too am guilty of this and I feel every kid in early 2000s is. The so called “Walnut” or “Apricot” face scrubs were a hit!
Even now in 2022, be it homegrown brands by adding ‘Pink Himalayan salt/Coffee grounds’ as a scrub or high end brands like Kylie Cosmetics’ infamous Walnut scrub are chasing us everywhere.
They cause tiny micro tears in your skin causing irritation, spread of infection and hyperpigmentation, especially if overdone.
Using them on active acne or open wound can aggravate your skin condition.
That’s that for today, folks! I hope you find this article useful and improve your skin care regime.
